A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
