Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
